Not enough young people are choosing careers in science, engineering and technology. Our future engineers, scientists and technologists need inspiring. Industrial companies like yours and qualified people like yourself play an important role in addressing this issue; can you help?
The Engineering Education Scheme in England & Scotland has, for over 21 years, been providing students with an in-depth experience of science, engineering and technology to help them make an informed decision about their future studies and career.
Can your company help?
The EES links engineering, applied science and technological companies with talented 16/17 year old students to solve real and live problems set by the companies. As a result of the EES experience over 89% of the young people go on to read engineering or associated science/IT/technical degrees. 30% of the students are women and 18% are from ethnic minorities.
Participating in the EES can bring multiple benefits to your company from cost effective project solutions (many EES teams have saved companies tens and even hundreds of thousands of pounds) to the opportunity for high quality professional development of your young engineers. In addition, the Scheme can provide early access to high ability, potential graduate or high level technician recruits.

How does the EES work?
A team of 4 talented sixth formers with their teachers from a local school/college will work with your engineer(s) for 6 months on a project chosen by your company. The Scheme starts in early autumn when the teams are selected and the project decided upon.
There is a formal Scheme Launch (SL) in October involving seminars and activities including team work, problem solving and project management.
In December or January the teams attend a 3 or 4 day university Residential Workshop (RW) where the project is progressed with the assistance of university personnel and resources.
The Scheme culminates in a high profile Celebration and Assessment Day (CAD) in April or May when the projects are assessed by teams of eminent professional engineers.

Engineer's Professional Development
Initial Professional Development (IPD) and Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Qualification by involvement in the Engineering Education Scheme in England & Scotland (EES)
IPD
Involvement by graduate engineers as Engineer in an EES project qualifies as IPD because it enables the engineer to, in accordance with IPD requirements:
- Demonstrate understanding of the life cycle of the engineering process relevant to industry sector
- Attain competence in the work of the engineering specialisation
- Work effectively in an appropriate financial, commercial and legal framework
- Organise work priorities and time
- Co-operate with colleagues and others

- Be personally responsible for their own development
Institutions recommend how these competencies should be recorded. In addition, the Scheme certificate awarded to EES Engineers for their involvement in the EES will contribute to the IPD record.
CPD
Involvement by chartered engineers as either Engineer in an EES project, or Company Assessor on a Celebration and Assessment Day qualifies as CPD because it demonstrates continued development of their competence and experience.
Mentoring by chartered engineers of graduate engineers involved as EES Engineers in EES projects, also qualifies for CPD because it demonstrates contribution to the development of others.
The EES is registered by the IET/IMechE as an approved provider of CPD activities. This means that all learning activities offered through the Scheme will be eligible for the Institutions??™ CPD Schemes.
The Scheme certificate awarded to EES Engineers for their involvement in the Scheme will contribute to the CPD record.

Testimonials
"EESE provides a great experience for our engineers to get out of the workplace and be involved with the local schools and students. It is an opportunity for us to run a project to a set timeframe, but with definite deliverables, which ultimately will be of practical use in the workplace."
Sue Fowler
